The Logo Stories: Episode 1 – Microsoft

So, we promised you guys something. Remember this post on our Facebook page?

Hey people! Look around, you’ll see logos all around you. Maybe you’re drinking a Coke, playing a game with your favorite car, a Lamborghini, or the screen you’re reading this post on, the brands and their logos. Have you ever wondered what their origins are?

Well, we though of giving you a little story of how and the pictures behind the logos you know and learned to love.

Sounds good? Yeah? Cool! We’ll try to post at least one good story per month. And you can always post what you know on our wall, or you can inbox us the stories you know as well.

A logo is an expression. It’s art. And emotions.“

So, we’re keeping our promise. Here the 1st episode of, The Logo Stories!

Love it or hate it, we all have used Microsoft products at least one stage in our lives. You maybe a Apple enthusiast, or Linux user, but you must’ve used Windows at one point, you must’ve used MS Word to type a letter.

This magnificent franchise, over the years had several faces to it. And every face depicts the era it was in and the cultural influence on the company and the logo itself.

So let’s get it in to it, shall we? Let’s go back some 40 years from today! Ah the 70’s! Groove on brother!

In 1975, Microsoft unveiled their logo, inspired by the awesome disco era.


Wonder what kind of party they had to unveil this. Should’ve been epic! According to Neatorama, Bill Gates and Paul Allen made this logo themselves using BASIC, a computer language program, within a day. So much for Graphic Design software eh?

Then something awesome happened! A frog happened. To be exact, Kermit the Frog happened. WHAT?

Between 1975 to 1987, this logo came to place.


“It’s not easy being Green!”

And the “O” was dubbed blibbet. After 1987, when the logo was no more, the employee Larry Osterman launched a “Save the Blibbet!” campaign. Talk about commitment. To a frog. Hi Ho!

Oh but wait, about the 80’s, Microsoft did have some alternative logos for their advertisements. Like this one, the Metallica inspired logo!


Consumer Products: Nothing Else Matters! \m/

So then came the Microsoft logo that I’ve known and grown up with. Between the time period of 1987 to 2012, “The Pacman” logo by Scott Baker was in use.


According to March 1987’s edition of Consumer Reseller News Magazine, “The new logo, in Helvetica italic typeface, has a slash between the o and s to emphasize the “soft” part of the name and convey motion and speed.”

Some say the slash made it look like a Pacman, hence the name, Pacman logo. Well it was the Arcade gaming era.

This logo did have some variations over the years with the taglines.


This one had a mind blowing budget of 100$ Million marketing campaign. Damn. What a tagline!


This was another variation.

So, in 2012, Microsoft updated their logo to a brand new look. Flatter, modern look.


According to Microsoft’s blog, “The logo has two components: the logotype and the symbol. For the logotype, we are using the Segoe font which is the same font we use in our products as well as our marketing communications. The symbol is important in a world of digital motion. The symbol’s squares of color are intended to express the company’s diverse portfolio of products.


After this logo, every Microsoft product had the same linear flatter look to them. Office, Visual Studio and everything. Font went to Segoe and it’s variations. Personally, we love this logo. Simple, and really attentive.
